If I could put a title on this week’s FPD I would call it, “Lessons from a rock fight”.
Obviously the story I’m talking about is in 1 Samuel 17: 41-50 the story of David, the shepherd boy, and his victory over Goliath, the giant warrior. Most sermons on this event has been preached from David’s side of the confrontation, but I want us to look at it from Goliath’s side. Sometimes you can learn more looking at a given outcome by learning what not to do, because Goliath did five things wrong in this rock fight. 1. He judged the Outcome of the fight by the size of the opponent. Always remember it’s the little foxes that spoil the vine, and that some of the world’s most venomous creatures are also the smallest. 2. He did not respect his Opponents weapon. Remember he laughed at the sling and the stone and the staff. Just because something appears innocent doesn’t mean it can’t kill you. 3. He was Overconfident. One of the most stern instructions given in scripture is, “take heed when you think you stand, lest you fall” 1 Corinthians 10:17. 4. He left a place of Vulnerability Uncovered. We must put on the whole armor of God and be completely covered in the blood of Christ. 5. He Risked His Life on a Lost Cause. He was on the losing side, because God has never and never will lose a battle. Always make sure that you’re sided with God’s Word, God’s Servants, and God’s Spirit.
